DAVID JONES – Rotarian and Past President (2001/2)

It is with regret that I am having to write this short Eulogy for David following his death on the 23rd November.
David had been a member of the Club since 1990 and during that time he contributed to the social side of the Club as well as being heavily involved in the business side, particularly in the last few years, by his contributions to the Community and Vocation Committee. He was keen on helping others and showed this by renewing the Club’s involvement with what was called RCAT and arranging annual prizes for some of those attending the College who suffered from learning difficulties. He also became involved in other works in the Rotherham area during his time as a member of our Club.
Although not strictly associated with Rotary, he was a member of the Octavian Golf Society and, despite him not being able to play latterly, he kindly arranged some of our Golf Away Trips and booked the weekly tee time for us at College Pines. When I told the Golf Club about his death, the immediate remark was “what a nice gentleman he was”. That to me sums up David.
Again not Rotary, but David celebrated New Year with Derek Cheetham and myself, and our wives, at The Crown Hotel, Scarborough and this New Year would have been our 19th visit.
David leaves his wife, Joan, son Martin and his wife, Samantha, and their two sons, Tom and Ben, and two great grandchildren – all of whom will sorely miss him. Our best wishes and condolences have been passed on to the family, and I am sure that as a Club we will do whatever we can to assist the family at this awful time.
On a personal note, I have lost a very good friend and mate, and I shall miss his company, but I will be able to reflect on the wonderful times that myself and Suzanne have had with David, Joan and his family in the past.
The funeral of David will be on Tuesday 17th December at 12.30 at the Crematorium, Rotherham followed by a reception at Sitwell Golf Club.
